Target/Best Buy Boycott…why everyone should
Okay so I am a liberal. Real shocker right? Earlier this week when I was told by multiple LGBT organizations that I should boycott Target I had to ask why? I’m not a huge fan of not researching something before I do it; I leave that up to the people who think FOX reports real news.
What I originally heard was to boycott Target because the corporation gave $150,000 to a Minnesota candidate for Governor who is anti-gay marriage. It seemed way out there to me because Target rates extremely high on the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index . So I dug a little deeper and I read this about the candidate in question, Tom Emmer, in the Huffington Post, “a far-right Republican who supports Arizona’s draconian immigration law, wants to abolish the minimum wage and even gave money to a fringe group that condoned the execution of gay people”.
Turns out Best Buy also gave $100,000. So why did they donate? Because large corporations LOVE Republicans. Just look at the Bush tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of this year. Corporations don’t care about people they care about dollars.
So why should everyone boycott Target and Best Buy and every other big box store? I’ll give you a couple reasons, I’m sure you can come up with others. As a corporation Target is leading an example of a practice that needs to stop. Thanks to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling (allowing companies to make unlimited expenditures on political campaigns) Corporations can give as much money as they want to whomever they choose. So yep corporations are now running the political campaign climate.
Another reason is because you should be supporting small business and local companies. Small business is what made this country of ours great in the first place. Big Box stores are killing the American dream, making the rich richer and the middle-class poor. According to Harvard Magazine 66% of the income growth between 2001 and 2007 went to the top 1% of all Americans.
So Target is sorry and they claim they will review donations more carefully in the future. But as long as we continue to let corporate America grow by supporting these big box companies, the more we lose control over our democracy. Look around and see who is really running the country. Is this the way you want it to be?
