Support Companies that support equality.

Every year, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — America’s largest civil rights organization, publishes the HRC Corporate Equality Index. You can find it online at To put it simply – the Corporate Equality Index rates corporations based on their current employee benefits & policies, their advertising support of the lgbt community, and whether or not they’re involved in anti-lgbt activities.

So which organizations should you be supporting and which should you avoid? Here are a few:

The Good Companies:

  • Chevron
  • AT&T
  • Bank of America
  • Toyota
  • Hewlett-Packard

Run Away…FAST:

  • Wal-Mart (this company – you should have avoided way before this list came out)
  • Exxon Mobil
  • Acer
  • Nissan
  • Auto-Zone

I recommend you go to the site for a complete listing and to keep up to date on what is happening in the lgbt community. On HRC’s website, you can search a particular company and see what their rating is.

As advocates for the lgbt community, it is important that we support organizations that stand for equality. It is just as important that we DO NOT support companies that do not stand for equality.

Can you stick by this concept?

Thank you for this list, years ago, I asked a friend what the blue sign with the two yellow stripes had meant, and he told me is was the “equality for all” symbol, I sheepishly admitted that I had thought it was some sort of yachting symbol, which he thought was hilarious.

Somewhat surprised to see Nissan on the list, as most Japanese companies seem to take no stand either way on such issues – at least publicly.

Thank you so much! Again – I could not agree with you more. I find I am running into the same issues with family and friends I know. I am also confronted by the slippery slope argument. Bleh!

Anyway – thanks for the list and thanks for continuing to put your voice in the mix about our rights!! ::much good juju heading your way::
